Telangana's veteran Telugu actor, Vijayashanti, has made a significant move by joining the Congress party ahead of the crucial Telangana election. She pointed out the alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), claiming that the BJP did not take any action against the allegedly corrupt Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR). Vijayashanti stated that while BJP leaders would visit Telangana and criticize KCR, there were no inquiries or investigations conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against him.
Expressing her disappointment with the BJP, Vijayashanti highlighted the removal of Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who opposed KCR, four months prior to the election, which she believes resulted in a setback for the party. She stressed that the Congress should hold KCR accountable and that he should be put behind bars. In her new role as the chief coordinator of the campaign and planning committee for the election, Vijayashanti stated her commitment to the Congress party.
Vijayashanti's political journey has been a varied one, as she has switched parties multiple times, including the erstwhile TRS. Originally associated with the BJP in 1997, she later joined the TRS and actively participated in the Telangana movement. In 2009, she became an MP from the TRS. However, in 2014, just before the formation of Telangana, Vijayashanti joined the Congress party. She created controversy in 2019 with her remarks about Prime Minister Modi ruling like a dictator and subsequently joined the BJP in 2020.
Aside from her political career, Vijayashanti has had an illustrious film career, working in various Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam films. Her portrayal of a female cop in the film Kartavyam earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She has also acted alongside renowned actors such as Anil Kapoor and Dharmendra in films like 'Eeshwar,' 'Apradhi,' and 'Gundagardi.'
Vijayashanti's decision to join the Congress party and her criticisms of the BJP-TRS alliance add a new dynamic to the upcoming Telangana election, as she emphasizes the need for accountability and action against alleged corruption. It remains to be seen how her involvement will shape the political landscape in Telangana as the election approaches.
