One issue that reportedly caused tension between Richard and James was an incident during a previous Christmas dinner. James politely asked Richard to step aside to ensure a stress-free meal, as past Boxing Days had turned sour between them. However, Richard's temper apparently flared up, resulting in a heated exchange.
In addition, James made headlines for being photographed in close company with a blonde woman, later revealed to be a PR advisor. Reports have also circulated about his partying with other women while working as a DJ.
During an appearance on This Morning in January, James spoke about his father-in-law's temper when it came to cooking under stress. Richard had apparently banned James from helping out with the festive meal.
