Getting a grip on those RAR parts before they waste your time
You grab a post from newsgroups, it looks complete, and then the unpack fails right at the end. That feeling is brutal. So I don’t trust the download just because all the files showed up in the folder. With multi part RAR sets, one tiny missing chunk can ruin everything, and you only find out after waiting forever.
I start by checking what I actually have. Are all the .rar and .r00 .r01 parts there, no weird sizes, no random gaps. Then I lean on PAR2 files because they’re basically the safety net that tells you if parts are damaged or missing, and sometimes they can even rebuild them. After that comes CRC checks during extraction, which is where WinRAR or 7 Zip will complain if something inside doesn’t match what it should be. When it complains, I don’t panic, I go back to PAR2 and repair first.
Quick wrap up
If you verify early with PAR2 and pay attention to CRC errors during unpacking, you stop doing that dumb loop of re downloading everything. You fix what’s broken, or you know fast that you need more blocks.
