Countryfile star Adam Henson and his wife Charlie recently tied the knot in a heartfelt ceremony, following Charlie's devastating pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The couple, who have been together for 28 years, decided to get married after Charlie expressed the urgency to do so. The wedding took place in September 2021, just one day before Charlie underwent surgery.
Adam Henson, 57, opened up about their emotional wedding vows in which they both shed tears. The ceremony served as a way to say goodbye to their loved ones and cement their commitment to each other. Charlie admitted that marriage had never been important to her until her cancer diagnosis, and she wanted Adam to know she was committed to him.
Charlie's cancer journey began when she fell ill over Christmas 2020 and later discovered a 4.5cm tumour. Initially thinking she had a stomach bug, she underwent various tests that eventually led to the shocking diagnosis. Hearing the news over the phone was incredibly difficult for her and she described it as "absolute hell."
Pancreatic cancer is known for being highly lethal, with about 95% of people who contract it dying from the disease. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death in the UK and accounts for approximately 9,500 deaths per year. Early detection is challenging, and symptoms often start to emerge in later stages when the cancer has spread to other organs.
Following the surgery, Charlie is now in ongoing recovery and continues regular scans to monitor her progress. Despite the lingering fear of test results, she has returned to work in television as a location manager and hopes to travel more with Adam.
The couple, who met in their teenage years and have two children together, have faced numerous challenges throughout their relationship. Adam, best known for his role on Countryfile, initially applied for the show after concerns about foot and mouth disease impacting his farm. Despite not getting the full-time job right away, he eventually became a regular presenter alongside John Craven.
Adam's new book Christmas on the Farm provides an intimate glimpse into his life and shares his festive memories on the Cotswolds farm where he grew up. Through their wedding and ongoing recovery, Adam and Charlie's story serves as a testament to strength, love, and the power of cherishing every moment.
