Andrew O'Keefe claims woman self-inflicted injuries, denies assault in court

Embattled television presenter Andrew O'Keefe appeared in court and shared his side of the story, vehemently denying allegations that he kicked, spat on, and scratched a woman during an argument in September 2021. Taking the stand at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court, O'Keefe emotionally claimed that the injuries inflicted on the woman were self-inflicted.

O'Keefe explained to the court that he was staying at the woman's house as a close contact of a Covid-infected person at the time. According to his testimony, an argument broke out between them, during which he maintained that the woman walked up to him in a restrained fury, accusing him of using derogatory language towards her child. He said she then demanded he leave and threatened to involve the police.

The former TV presenter stated that during the incident, the woman forcefully grabbed him, and he continued walking while carrying her weight. O'Keefe expressed surprise at the woman's subsequent allegation and vehemently denied insulting her child with the offensive term she claimed he used.

As he gathered his belongings, O'Keefe alleged that the woman followed him, prompting him to move her aside at times. He recalled that, in the midst of the encounter, she slapped him across the chest. O'Keefe emphasized that he never assaulted or held her to the floor.

During his testimony in court, O'Keefe became emotional as he mentioned his interaction with the woman's children and revealed that she expressed regret for allowing him back into her life. The court also heard evidence from a neighbor who stated that she witnessed scratches on the alleged victim's arms and marks on her chest on the night of the incident.

O'Keefe's arrest two days after the alleged incident was also shown in footage presented to the court. He spent nearly five months in custody before being released on bail, facing charges of common assault, resisting a police officer, possess prohibited drug, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. O'Keefe has, however, pleaded guilty to contravening an Apprehended Violence Order.

The former television star, who had a notable career with Channel 7 and received recognition for his charity work, has faced a significant shift in the spotlight since the assault allegations surfaced. As the court proceedings continue, O'Keefe is fighting to clear his name and seek justice, maintaining his innocence while offering an alternative narrative of events.
